Rich Experiences

The first generation of web technologies brought tremendous leaps forward in enabling people to connect to information (and to each other), but it also brought a step backward from a user interface perspective.

Going from rich, immersive, multi-threaded, graphical desktop interfaces to the heavily textual, page-centered metaphor of the first generation web in a sense brought all users baccck to simple , command line, text-based interfaces

Thankfuly, current technologies allow us to combine the global data access (the "cloud" of Internet connectivity) with the graphical, immersive, desktop experience of modern operating systems to create rich experiences using Internet standards and technologies.

"The web browser is the only application on most modern desktops which has a 'working' icon designed into it as a primary element . Waiting is such a central part of the web experience that we accept this design decision without even recognizing it." - John Eckman
