Open Source CMS Drupal Helps InfoWorld Pursue New Content Strategy

By Chris Fuller on 15 Apr 2009

Like many media and publising brands, InfoWorld.com came to Optaros looking to for new and efficient ways to better expose and organize content and encourage reader participation. It’s no secret that traditional publishers are undergoing a sea change in their approach to garnering reader interest and eyeballs, while looking to cut costs and generate new revenue streams. It’s a difficult, though increasingly familiar, story and a perfect scenario for leveraging the flexibility and economy of Open Source.

Optaros was chosen by IDG Communications (parent of the InfoWorld brand) to help do exactly that by relaunching infoworld.com on the Drupal open source CMS platform.

The primary goal of the new site is to better organize and feature content, something that the editorial team needs powerful and flexible tools to achieve. While Drupal provided the flexibility, Optaros layered on the expertise to make the system powerful and scalable. By extending Drupal, the combined Optaros/IDG team provided a variety of advanced web content management features, including a media management tool that acts as a small-scale DAM (digital asset management) system, workflow for editorial and sales teams and a variety of tools for promoting and featuring content on the site.

Using open source also allowed IDG to significantly reduce both cost and build time over traditional, proprietary, software without sacrificing any of the desired flexibility or features. The Optaros/IDG partnership, combined with the use of OptAM and Drupal helped IDG realize their vision for a new site on budget in less than six months. The site has already seen a significant uptick in traffic and is poised to help IDG accomplish its long-term business goals.
