Open Source Business Intelligence with JasperReports – a major component in our assembled solutions

By Optaros on 24 Oct 2008

In recent engagements, at State of Vaud and City of Lausanne, Optaros has successfully assembled JasperReports, to the overall solution delivered to the Customers, as main component for providing high performance and business oriented reporting.

JasperReports, an open source business intelligence solution, provides a mature reporting engine, fast to implement and with many extension capabilities. At Optaros, one of our key differenciator is the capability to implement and assemble fast. This is a clear advantage when using by JasperReports with its open and Java based architecture. A clear and concrete example is the way we implemented the reporting module for our Customers mentioned above:

* It approximatively took 7 days – at the State – for implementing 5 relatively complex reports. Whereas it took 5 – at the City – to implement 3 reports. The difference comes from the fact it is quite straight forward to plug SugarCRM with JasperReports(*), while it takes more effort to assemble Liferay with JasperReports(**).

* Above efforts include the technical integration of JasperReports in our solution.

The velocity factor is linked to the flexibility of the tool and its architecture. JasperReports integrates well, with small configuration effort, with SugarCRM using ZuckerReports; it integrates less easily with Liferay Portal, but its openess allows to extend Liferay Portal to fully support JasperReports.

Another factor of interest and promotion of JasperSoft components is that at the State of Vaud, JasperReports has become the standard business intelligence tool to be considered, when new solutions are designed that require a reporting module.

(*) The assembly for State of Vaud was using SugarCRM as core component

(**) The assembly for City of Lausanne was using Liferay as core component.
